What to expect:

During our call, I will look through your child's portfolio and chat with you both about all the cool things you've been learning all year!  I will ask about the progress they are making and what their goals are for the future.  Afterward, I will email the completed evaluation form to you which is due to your school district by June 30th.

Please be sure you have prepared:

A log of reading materials used. This can include curriculum or other books, audio books, web sites, computer programs, apps, or anything your child has used to learn.  Keep a running log throughout the year of the resources you are using. It can be as simple as a handwritten list on notebook paper -- use whatever method that works best for YOU.

Samples of student learning. This can be worksheets, writing, art, field trip info, photographs or other media, or any types of samples you wish to share.  If your child uses workbooks, copy a page or two. Loves to write?  One short story is plenty. Uses Teaching Textbooks or another online program?  Print the end-of-year progress report.  Does lots of art or projects?  Share a few photos and let them tell me about it.  Attended a co-op class?  A progress report is enough. Please let your child share what they are proud of but do not worry about having "enough".  Let the samples be a springboard for us to talk about the experiences your child has had.

Standardized test results (Grades 3, 5, and 8 only).  The online, untimed CAT (California Achievement Test) is the most popular and stress-free testing option.  It can be purchased at various web sites and results are available immediately upon completion of the test.  This can be done at any time during the school year, prior to your evaluation. Simply save the results at the end and put in your portfolio.  Remember, scores do not matter, they just need to be included.

Transcript (Grade 12 only). If you wish to issue the PA Dept of Education Diploma to your graduating senior, please bring a transcript or completed diploma checklist.  If you need assistance with these items, please schedule an appointment prior to your evaluation and I’ll be happy to help you!

Digital Portfolio Options

I will need your digital portfolio to review prior to our call.  There are multiple ways to provide that:

  • Google Docs - You may save your portfolio (as one or multiple documents) to a Google Doc folder and email a link to my gmail at homeschoolotb@gmail.com.  It is helpful to put everything into one folder.

  • Email - You may send your portfolio directly to me via email as one PDF document at nikkidonahue@verizon.net

  • Facebook Group - You may create a private Facebook group where you post all of your portfolio items.  You must add me as a friend and invite me to the group so I can see it.  It is helpful to put all photos into one album (or one album per child).  https://www.facebook.com/nikki.donahue.750

  • Other platform -  I am open to using other platforms; just let me know ahead of time how you would like to present your portfolio.

Connecting

We can use the Zoom platform or Facebook Messenger video call.  When you receive your appointment reminder the week before your appointment, I will ask which you prefer.

For Zoom, I will send a link the day of the appointment.  Please familiarize yourself with the Zoom platform ahead of time if you’ve never used it before so that we can begin our appointment on time.
